Innervation of the Human Anterior Cruciate Ligament
Schech, Joseph M.

Abstract
In the previous studies, mainly biomechanical aspects were focused in human anterior cruciate ligaments. The ligament have been minly considered as mechanical and structural joint stabilizer.
The papers of distibution of nerve fiber in human anterior cruciate ligaments were a few and results were variable.
Authors studied the innervation of 42 human anterior cruciate ligaments obtained during total knee arthroplasty.
Immunohistochemical staining technique using S-100 protein (dako, corp, Denmark) was employed to identify nerve fibers.
The nerve fibers were found in subsynovial layer and interfascicular connective tissue of anterior cruiate ligaments.
The number of the nerve fibers distribution in subsynovial layer were more than interfascicular tissue.
Mainly, the nerve fibers were found perivascular tissue.
Authors did not identified the detail nerve fiber type and difference of distribution. If detail nerve fiber type and difference of distribution were obtained, The material was fresh or frozen and section transversely, not longitudinally.
